Oil-water separators are used to treat oil-water mixtures from bilge tanks, oil that has accumulated in any compartment of a ship, and is discharged into the sea. The oil-water separator consists of three subunits: the separator unit, the filter unit, and the Oil Content Monitor (OCM) and control unit. It has received full type approval from Classification Societies, including BV, CCS, RMR, and others.

Factors affecting the separation of oil and bilge water:

• Density: Since water is denser than oil, it will rise

• Sufficient density difference: seawater is denser than freshwater.

• Viscosity of a continuous fluid: A less viscous, less dense fluid provides better conditions for oil to move towards the surface than a more viscous, denser fluid.

• Temperature: Temperature plays a crucial role. It is an important factor affecting density and viscosity.

• Particle Size: The separation of oil and water is directly proportional to the size of the oil particles.

Applications

Oil-water separators are applicable to various types of vessels, including cargo ships, passenger ships, oil tankers, fishing boats, and barges. During navigation or at berth, these vessels produce oily wastewater in the engine room bilge, which may contain a variety of fuel oils, high-density residual sludge, and emulsion mixtures composed of oxidized iron, surfactants, etc. Marine oil-water separators can effectively treat this wastewater, ensuring compliance with discharge standards. According to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, vessels must be equipped with oil-water separators within 12 nautical miles from shore. This regulation aims to protect the offshore environment and prevent oil pollution from damaging the marine ecology. Therefore, vessels operating within this range must ensure that their oil-water separators are in normal working condition. In addition to the maritime field, the technology and principle of marine oil-water separators can also be applied to other occasions that require the treatment of oily wastewater, such as the oil wastewater treatment in industrial and mining enterprises.
